SRILA PURUSHOTTAMA DASA THAKURA KI JAYA

Purushottama Dasa Thakura – Biography

Disappearance Day of Shri Purushottama Das Thakura

sadasivasuto namna nagarah purusottamah

Nagar Purushottam was previously the cowherd named Daman in Vraja. He is now born in a Vaidya family as the son of Sadashiva. (Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika 131)

Daman was one of the twelve Gopals and a companion of Krishna in his childhood pastimes in Vraja. In the eleventh chapter of the Adi-lila of Chaitanya Charitamrita, Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami has listed Purushottam Das amongst the Devotees of Lord Nityananda.

Sadashiva Kaviraj was a great personality. Purushottam Das was his son. From birth, Purushottam das was absorbed in the service of the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, and he always engaged in childish play with Lord Krishna. His son was named Shri Kanu Thakur, a very respectable gentleman. His body was saturated with the nectar of Love for Lord Krishna. (Chaitanya Charitamrita 1.11.38-40)

Vrindavan Das Thakur has also named Purushottam Das as one of Nityananda Prabhu's chief associates.

Sadashiva Kaviraj was very fortunate to have a son like Purushottam Das. Purushottam Das had no external consciousness of his body, for Nityananda Prabhu is constantly acting through him. (Chaitanya Bhagavata 3.5.741-2)

For four generations the family of Purushottam Das consisted of eternally perfect direct associates of Mahaprabhu: Kamsari Sen, Sadashiva Kaviraj, Purushottam Thakur, and Kanu Thakur. The Gaura-ganodesha-dipika identifies Kamsari Sen as Ratnavali Sakhi and Sadashiva Kaviraj as Chandravali (156). (In the image: Krishna Chandravali, Rithora).

Purushottam Thakur's wife was named Jahnava Devi. She died while her son, Kanu Thakur, was just a young child. Nityananda Prabhu named the boy Shishu Krishna Das. It is said that Nityananda Prabhu's wife Jahnava Devi adopted Kanu and took him with her to Vrindavan. Some say that he was also one of the twelve Gopals. One legend about Kanu Thakur holds that when in Vrindavan, while he was dancing in kirtan, his ankle bell flew off. He vowed that he would make his residence wherever the ankle bell was recovered. When it was found in the town of Bodhkhana in Jessore district, he established his Shripat there. In the opinion of some, Madhavacharya (Madhava Chattopadhyaya) of Jirat in Hooghly district, the husband of Nityananda Prabhu's daughter Ganga Devi, was Purushottam Thakur's disciple.

Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur has the following to say about Purushottam Thakur's Shripat: "Purushottam Das Thakur lived at Sukhasagara, midway between the Chakdaha and Simurali railway stations. The Deities he installed were formerly served in Beledanga village, but when the Temple fell into the river, the Deities were taken to Sukhasagara. That Temple was also swallowed by the Ganges and so the Deities were brought with Jahnava Mata's Deity to Sahebdanga Berigram. Since that place was also destroyed, all the Deities were again moved about three or four miles to the village named Chanduregram, on the banks of the Ganges about one mile up from Pal Para." (Anubhasya 1.11.39)

Devakinandana Das, the author of the Vaishnava-vandana, was Purushottam Thakur's disciple. There he writes,

"I worship Sadashiva Kaviraj with great attentiveness. He was constantly intoxicated with love and had no external consciousness… I bow down to my worshipable Lord, Purushottam Thakur. Who can list his incomparable qualities? He was merciful to those who were devoid of virtue, displaying the natural power of his compassion. When only seven years old, he was so intoxicated with love for Krishna that he danced in a way that enchanted the entire world."

The following supplementary information is given in the Gaudiya-Vaishnava Abhidhana:

"Some people say that Purushottam's surname was Nagar, while others say that the name Nagar comes from the name of the area where he lived. Since the five villages (Beledanga, Berigram, Sukhasagar, Manasapota and Pal Para) are so close together, this area is sometimes called Nagaradesh. Purushottam once ate snake poison when in a trance state without experiencing any ill effects. This was a source of great astonishment to all who witnessed it. Many of Nityananda Prabhu's associates often displayed such miraculous powers."

SRILA RASIKANANDA PRABHU KI JAYA

Rasikananda Prabhu
Rasikananda Prabhu
One time some mad elephants attacked Rasikananda. Calmly, he chanted "Gauranga, Gauranga, Krishna, Krishna" while sprinkling water on the rampaging beasts. The elephants immeditately stopped charging, humbly bowed their heads, raised their trunks, and bellowed "Hare Krishna! Hare Krishna!" (In the wallpaper: Rasikananda Prabhu, and some elephants).
Shri Rasikananda Prabhu (Rasika Murari) appeared as the son of a king. He became a perfect sage, Gaudiya Vaishnava scholar, rasika bhakta, and the most beloved disciple of Shri Shyamananda Prabhu.

On Shyamananda Prabhu's order, Rasikananda became the head pujari and served his guru's Deity of Govindaji with total dedication. His attentive loving service increased Govindaji's beauty and pleasure. Rasika Murari enchanted the Devotees with his unprecedented Deity service. After firmly establishing Govindaji's worship, he accepted Shyamananda's order to preach.

He traveled widely for forty years, influencing everyone with the message of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Rasikananda delivered everyone from pious royal families to Muslims, outcastes, agnostics, atheists, and even wild animals.

Hare Krishna!"

At the time of leaving his body, Rasikananda began a powerful kirtana. Then he left this world by entering into the Kshira-chora Gopinatha Deity in Remuna, Orissa. Devastated in separation, his disciples dropped their mrdangas, karatals-and their bodies. The pushpa samadhis of all these pure Devotees stand near the Temple. SRILA JAGANNATHA DASA BABAJI KI JAYA

Jagannatha Dasa Babaji
Jagannatha Dasa Babaji
Shrila Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja.
Shrila Jagannatha Dasa Babaji Maharaja lived for one hundred forty-four years. He took diksha from Shri Madhusudana Dasa Babaji and did bhajana for many year at Surya Kunda in Vrindavana. Thakura Bhaktivinoda received valuable instructions on pure devotional service from Jagannatha Dasa Babaji.

His practice was to live six months in Shri Navadwipa dhama and six in Vraja mandala. "During his time," said Thakura Bhaktivinoda, "Shri Jagannatha Dasa Babaji was the.most advanced rasika Vaishnava in Gaura and Vraja mandalas, and Purushottam Kshetra (Jagannatha Puri)." Bhaktivinoda Thakura gave him the title Sarvabhauma, the chief of the Vaishnavas.

At one hundred twenty-five years old his body appeared bent like a semi-circle. His eyelids hung over his eyes like heavy stage curtains. Standing on either side, two disciples would lift his droopy eyelids so he could offer Tulasi manjaris to his Deity of Shri Giriraja Govardhana.
Since Jagannatha Dasa Babaji could barely walk, Bihari, his Vrajavasi servant, used to carry him on his shoulders. But whenever there was a Nama kirtana Jagannatha Dasa Babaji would bolt out of his basket and leap four feet into the air. In great ecstasy he would begin to sing and dance. He performed vigorous bhajana despite physical limitations.
He was fond of chanting loudly in both japa and kirtana. During kirtana he would sing: Nitai ki nama enechi re! Ki nama enechi rei Ki nama diteche re! "0h Lord Nityananda, what a wonderful name You have brought. 0h Nitai, what a wonderful name You have given." After chanting almost the whole night, the next morning he would offer 1,108 dandavats to the Deities. He was always enthusiastic to serve the Vaishnavas.

He lived as an ascetic following a strict diet and the yearly Chaturmasya (four month fast). The first month he ate only four bananas in the evening; second month only guavas; third month only whey; fourth month only boiled banana flowers without salt.

Once he begged a roti (flat bread) from a Vrindavana street sweeper. Hearing about this, the leading men of Vrindavana said to Jagannatha Dasa Babaji, "Baba, you are the crest jewel of Vraja. It pains us to hear anyone criticizing you. But now everyone is talking against you. They are saying, 'Baba's gone mad. If he defies the age old traditions what will happen to society.'"
Babaji Maharaja replied, "You are all learned people. Don't you know the importance of the dust of Vrindavana? It is so surcharged with Krishna prema that even Lord Brahma desires to become a particle of Vraja raja (dust of Vrindavana). Therefore, isn't a Vrindavana sweeper who is constantly serving the dust; breathing it, rolling in it, and bathing in it more pure than anyone else?" Silence filled the air indicating everyone's acceptance of Babaji Maharaja's reply.

While living in Navadwipa dhama Jagannatha Dasa Babaji showed deep respect toward all residents. Even when some puppies ate from his plate he didn't protest. Bihari, his servant, became disgusted to see dogs devouring his guru's Prasadam and he drove them away. Jagannatha Dasa Babaji scolded Bihari, "These puppies are residents of the holy dhama. They are not ordinary living entities. I will not eat until they come back to share the Maha-prasadam from my plate."

At the age of one hundred forty-two he couldn't see or walk. To confirm his findings Thakura Bhaktivinoda requested Jagannatha Dasa to see Lord Chaitanya's appearance place. Intoxicated with Gauranga prema, Jagannatha Dasa Babaji lept high in the air and began chanting and dancing at the discovery of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Yogapitha. "Out of compassion for all the conditioned souls Jagannatha Dasa Babaji transferred his power of bhajana, knowledge of the sastras, and prema bhakti directly into the heart of Bhaktivinoda Thakura," said Shripad B.V. Narayana Maharaja.

Jagannatha Dasa Babaji had many disciples. He often gave the following instructions:
   (1) "You must avoid women, men who associate with women, or with a man who in any way associates with a man who associates with a woman.

   (2) "To realize the supreme goal of life you must repeat Harinama regularly and steadfastly. Steadiness is so important that it must be maintained even at the cost of one's life.
   (3) "Never forget Gaura who is more merciful and benevolent than Krishna. Krishna is like a just ruler who takes into account your offenses in His administration of justice. Gaura does not take your offenses into account. Whereas, Krishna is more interested in the dispensation of justice, Gaura is more interested in the distribution of mercy. From this point of view, Gaura-kirtana is more useful than Krishna-kirtana. Gaura-kirtana means: Shri Krishna Chaitanya, Prabhu Nityananda, Shri Advaita, Gadadhara, Shrivasadi, Gaura bhakta vrinda.
   (4) "Krishna is the avatara of Dvapara-yuga. Gaura is the Kali-yuga avatara. We should sing the name and glories of the avatara in whose age we live; just as in a kingdom we praise the ruling king." jaya saci-nandana gaura hari, jaya saci-nandana gaura hari.
The Sonar Gauranga Temple in Gopala Bagh, Vrindavana houses Gaura-Nitai Deities once worshiped in Surya-kunda by Shri Jagannatha Dasa Babaji. In Krishna lila he serves as Rasika-manjari.

THE DIFFERENCE

Vrindavan, India, February 28, 2014
The difference, or Haripada Javier Figuerola Dasa Brahmachari
Today I was reflecting on the difference between Srila Prabhupada and his spiritual brothers , to reflect on this topic I'm not disparaging the spiritual brothers of Srila Prabhupada also Srila Prabhupada instructed us not metiéramos us with their spiritual brothers and we could commit offenses. To understand this difference we have to understand the position of Srila Prabhupada , we all understand and accept that Srila Prabhupada is an avatara saktyavesa , avatara literally means one who descends from the spiritual world, and empowered by God saktyavesa means to make a mission on Earth . Srila Prabhupada was born pure and can never pollute, he is a resident of Goloka Vrindavana the highest spiritual planet, all spiritual teachers of our guru- parampara coming from the spiritual world , Srila Prabhupada says in the Bhagavad Gita 4, 42 a teacher spiritual is in the disciplic succession from time eternal , that is the difference between Srila Prabhupada and his spiritual brothers. It seems to me a great injustice to think that Srila Prabhupada Srila Prabhupada 's guru is a guru like other gurus.
Only persons who sacrifice their lives to serve Srila Prabhupada with faith, love , attachment and gratitude are qualified to go back to God and the spiritual world there continue their service in spirit form to Srila Prabhupada.
I 'm reading the siksa mana or preaching to the mind of Srila Raghunatha Dasa Goswami and that you understand and agree that the hardest thing to purify the propensity for us to deceive ourselves and others.
Thought to ponder
A fool repeats his mistakes. A smart man learns from his errorees . But a genius learns from the mistakes of others . A humble person learns from everyone , but a proud person does not learn from anyone.

VIJAYA EKADASI

Vijaya Ekadasi

Yudhisthira Maharaj said, “Oh Lord Sri Krishna, O glorious son of Vasudeva, please be merciful to me and describe the Ekadasii that occurs during the dark fortnight of the month of Phalguna (February-March)"

Lord Sri Krishna replied, “Oh Yudhisthira, Oh king of kings, gladly I shall tell you about this great fast, known as Vijaya Ekadasii. Whoever observes it certainly achieves success in this life and the next. All the sins of one who fasts on this Ekadasii and hears its sublime glories are eradicated.

“Narada Muni once asked lord Brahma, who sits on a lotus flower about the Vijaya Ekadasii. Sri Narada said, ‘Oh best of all the demigods, kindly tell me the merit one can achieve by faithfully observing Vijaya Ekadasii.’
“Narada’s great father then replied, ‘My dear son, this oldest of fasting days is pure, and it nullifies all sins. I have never revealed this to anyone until today, but you can understand beyond any doubt that this Ekadasii bestows the result indicated by its name… (Vijaya meaning Victory).

“When Lord Rama was exiled to the forest for fourteen years, He, the goddess Sita, and His divine brother Lakshmana stayed at Panchavati as mendicants. Mother Sita was then kidnapped by the demon Ravana, and Lord Rama seemingly became bewildered like an ordinary man by distress. While searching for His beloved consort, the Lord came upon the dying Jatayu and thereafter killed His enemy Kabandha.. The great devotee-vulture Jatayu returned to Vaikuntha after telling Rama how His dear Sita had been abducted by Ravana.

“ ‘Later, Lord Rama and Sugriva, the king of the monkeys, became friends. Together they amassed a grand army of monkeys and bears and sent HanumAnji his minister to Sri LankA, where he was able to see Janaki (Srimati Sita devi) in an Ashoka grove garden. He delivered Lord Rama’s message and showed the ring proving his authenticity for rendering such great service to the Supreme Lord Sri Rama.“ ‘With the help of Sugriva, Lord Rama proceeded toward Sri Lanka. Upon arriving at the shore of the ocean with the army of monkeys, He could understand that the water was uncommonly deep and hostile. Thus He said to Lakshmana, “Oh son of Sumitra, how can We earn enough merit to be able to cross this vast ocean, the unfathomable abode of Varuna deva? I can see no easy way to cross it, teeming as it is with sharks and other ferocious aquatics.”

“ ‘Lakshmana replied, “Oh best of all beings, Oh origin of all the devas, Oh primal personality, the great sage Bakad Albhya lives on an island just four miles from here. Oh Raghava, he has seen many BrahmAs come and go, so aged and wise is he. Let us go to him, take his darshan (audience) and ask him how We can safely reach Our goal.”

“ ‘So Rama and Lakshmana proceeded to the humble Ashrama of the incomparable Bakad Albhya Muni. Approaching him, the two Lords paid Their respectful obeisances to him as if he were a second Vishnu. Bakad Albhya could immediately understand, however, that Sri Rama was actually the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who for His own reasons had appeared on the Earth and was enacting just like a human being.
“ ‘ “Rama, “ said BakadAlbhya, “Oh best of the human beings, why have You come to my lowly abode?”
“ ‘The Lord replied, “Oh great, twice born brahmin, I have come here to the ocean shore with My phalanx of monkey and bear warriors in order to cross the sea and conquer LankA and its demon horde headed by Ravana. Oh greatest of sages, please be merciful unto Me and please tell Me how I can cross this vast ocean. That is why I have come to your Ashrama today.”
“ ‘The sage said, “Oh Lord Sri Rama, I shall tell you of the most exalted of all fasts, observing which You will surely conquer Ravana and be eternally glorified. Kindly now listen with full attention.

“ ‘ “On the day before Ekadasii, fashion a water pot of gold or silver, or even copper. Even clay will do if these metals are unavailable. Fill the pot with pure water and then decorate it nicely with mango leaves. Cover it and place it near a holy altar upon a mound of seven grains (the seven grains are barley, wheat, rice, corn, chickpeas, kukani, and dahl or peas). Now take Your morning bath, decorate the water pot with flower garlands and sandalwood paste, and inn the concave lid atop the pot place there the barley, pomegranate, and coconut. Now with great love and devotion worship the water pot Deity form and offer Him incense, sandalwood paste, flowers, a ghee lamp, and a plate of sumptuous foods. Remain there awake that night beside this sacred pot. On top of the lid filled with barley, etc., place a golden murthy of Lord Sri Narayana.
“ ‘ “When Ekadasii dawns, take Your morning bath and then decorate the water pot with fine sandalwood paste and garlands. Then worship the pot again with first class incense, lamps, sandalwood paste and flowers dipped in sandalwood paste, and then devoutly/devotedly place many kinds of cooked food, pomegranate, and coconut before the water pot. Then remain awake over night.

“ ‘ “When the Dwadasi dawns, take the water pot to the bank of a holy river, or even to the shore of a small pond. After worshipping it again properly, Oh King of kings, offer it with all the aforementioned ingredients to a pure hearted brahmin, expert in the Vedic sciences. If You and Your military commanders observe the Vijaya Ekadasii in this way, You will surely be victorious in every way.”

“” ‘Lord Sri Ramachandra Bhagavan, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, did just as Bakad Albhya Muni instructed, and thus He conquered all demoniac forces. Similarly, anyone who observes the Vijaya Ekadasii in this way will always be victorious in this mortal world, and after leaving this world he/she will reside forever in the anxiety free realm of the Kingdom of God known as the Vaikunthas.”

“ ‘Oh Narada, my son, from this history you can understand why one should observe this Ekadasii fast properly, strictly following the rules and regulations. This fast is powerful enough to eradicate all one’s sinful reactions, even the most abominable ones.”

Lord Sri Krishna concluded, “Oh Yudhisthira, anyone who reads or hears this history will attain the same great merit as that which is earned by performing a horse sacrifice on days of yore.”

Thus ends the narration of the glories of Phalguna-krsna Ekadasii or Vijaya Ekadasii, from the Skanda Purana.

These stories have been summarized and slightly changed, abbreviated or added to from how they are found in the celebrated book, "Ekadasi: The Day of Lord Hari" 1986. HH Krishna Balaram Swami. Bhaktivedanta Institute Press.

SRILA ISVARA PURI KI JAYA

Ishvara Puri – Biography
Ishvara Puri
Ishvara Puri.
Shri Krishnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami has described in Siri Chaitanya Charitamrta that the first sprout of the desire tree of devotion was manifested in the person of Shri Madhavendra Puri, and that that sprout developed into a sapling in the person of Shri Ishvara Puri. Then, in the person of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Who was also the gardener Himself, that sapling become the trunk of a enormous tree, the desire tree of devotion. [C. C. Adi 9.10-11]
Shri Ishvara Puri appeared in this world on the full moon day of the month of Jyestha. He served his guru, Shri Madhavendra Puri, very faithfully, especially during the end of Shri Puripada's life. [C. C. Antya 8.26]
Shri Ishvara Puri, in his travels to various holy places, once came to Shridhama Navadwipa, where he stayed in the house of Shri Gopinatha Acharya. At that time Shri Nimai Pandita was absorbed in His pastimes of learning. Ishvara Puri entered Nadiya nagara in disguise and thus no one could understand who he really was.
"That noble minded gentleman, was always absorbed in the mellows of devotion to Shri Krishna. He was thus extremely dear to Shri Krishna and he was an ocean of mercy. No one, however, could recognize him by his dress. By the will of fate, he came to Shri Advaita Acharya's house." [C. B. Adi 11]
He  came to where Shri Advaita Acharya was engaged in worshipping Shri Krishna and quietly sat down there. By his divine lustre one Vaishnava cannot remain hidden from another. Advaita Acharya began to look in his direction again and again. Finally he asked him: "Bap! Who are you? I have a feeling you are a Vaishnava sannyasi."
Shri Ishvara Puri very humbly replied: "I am a low class shudra, come to view your lotus feet." Mukunda Datta, who was also present could also understand that this is a Vaishnava sannyasi and thus he contrived to expose him. In his sweet voice, he began a kirtana describing Shri Krishna's pastimes. When Shri Ishvara Puri heard that kirtan he at once fell to the ground, and the earth beneath him became wet with his tears. The Devotees present were dumbstruck. "We haven't seen a Vaishnava like this before."
Advaita Acharya very firmly embraced him. Now everyone could understand that this is Madhavendra Puri's dearmost disciple, Shri Ishvar Puri. Loud shouts of "Hari! Hari!" rose up into the air.
Shri Ishvara Puri remained at Navadwipa for some days. One day when Nimai Pandita was returning home from the school, He happened by chance to meet Shri Ishvara Puri on the way. Shri Ishvara Puri was as though mesmerized while looking at the son of Sachi, and thought to himself, "He has all the indications of being a divine personage, and appears very grave indeed."
Shrila Ishvara Puri inquired, "Oh  Viprabori ! May I know Your name? Where do You live? What is that manuscript in Your hand?" Mahaprabhu very humbly offered His namaskar. Some of His disciples replied, "His name is Nimai Pandit." Exclaiming, "You are the famous Nimai Pandita!" Ishvara Puri felt very happy to meet Him. Mahaprabhu, coming forward and bowing His head, humbly requested, "Shripada, please come with Me to My house and be My guest for lunch."
Ishvara Puri thought to himself, "What a pleasant demeanour He has!" As though charmed by some mantra he quietly came along with the Pandit to His house. Arriving there, Mahaprabhu personally washed his feet, while in the Deity room, Sachi Mata offered the various preparations that she had prepared to the Lord. Then Mahaprabhu served that Prasadam to Shri Ishvara Puri and afterwards accepted his remnants. Thereafter they sat in the Temple (Visnu graha) and discussed Krishna-katha, by which they both became filled with ecstatic love.
Shri Ishvara Puri thus remained at Navadwipa for a few months, staying at the house of Shri Gopinatha Acharya. Everyday Mahaprabhu would come to have darshan of his lotus feet and occasionally He would invite him for lunch. At that time Srila Gadadhara Pandita was just a young boy and Isvara Puri was very affectionate to him. He began to teach him from the book which he had composed "Sri Krsna Lilamrta".
One evening when Mahaprabhu had come to offer His obeisances to Isvara Puri, Srila Puripada spoke to him, "You are a great pandita. I have composed a manuscript about Sri Krsna's pastimes. If you would please hear it, then I can recite it before You, and You can correct any mistakes that there might be. I will be very pleased if You do this."
Mahaprabhu replied smilingly, "Whatever a devotee speaks is dictated by Sri Krsna Himself. If anyone sees any fault in this then he is simply a sinful wretch. Whatever poems he composes, certainly Krsna is very pleased by that. Krsna accepts the mood in which things are offered as the most substantial part of the offering." To Isvara Puri these words were like drops of nectar and he could understand that Sri Nimai Pandita was an extraordinary person. After passing some days in Nadia, Isvara Puri continued his tour of the holy places.
Meanwhile Mahaprabhu was bringing His pastimes of learning to a close and now desired to reveal His true Self and establish the religion of the age by distributing love of Godhead through the chanting of His Holy Names. Thus He came to Gaya, ostensibly to offer pinda for His departed father and forefathers. Sri Isvara Puri was present at that time at Gaya. After having offered pinda at the various holy shrines, he finally came to the place where the lotus footprints of Sri Visnu are. While taking darshan and hearing of the glories of the shrine Mahaprabhu fainted and fell to the ground. By the arrangement of Providence, Sri Isvara Puri happened to come to that spot just then and learned from Sri Candrashekar Acarya what had transpired. After a short time Mahaprabhu regained His consciousness, and seeing Isvara Puri He got up to offer His obeisances. Sri Isvara Puri embraced Him and the two of them were drenched by each others tears of love.
Mahaprabhu addressed Isvara Puri, "My journey to Gaya is successful just by My seeing your lotus feet. If one offers Pinda at this holy place, then his forefathers become delivered. But simply by seeing you, tens of millions of forefathers get liberation. Therefore your presence is even more auspicious than that of this holy tirtha. All of the holy tirthas pray for the dust of your lotus feet. Therefore, O Puripada, I am praying at your lotus feet to ferry me across the ocean of material existence and to cause me to drink the nectar from Krsna's lotus feet."
Srila Isvara Puri replied, "Please hear me Panditji, I have understood that You are an incarnation of the Supreme Lord. This morning I saw a very auspicious dream and now that has actually materialized. From the first day I saw you at Navadwipa, I have always thought of You. I get such pleasure by seeing You, as much pleasure as I get by seeing Krsna."
Hearing this, Mahaprabhu bowed his head and smilingly replied, "This is my great fortune."
On another day Mahaprabhu approached Sri Isvar Puri and requested that he initiate Him with the divine mantra. "My mind is becoming very restless in anticipation of this initiation. "Srila Puripada very blissfully replied, "What to speak of mantras, I am prepared to offer You my very life." [C. B. Adi 17.10]
Thereafter Srila Isvara Puri initiated Mahaprabhu with the divine mantra.
One morning Srila Isvara Puri came to where Mahaprabhu was staying. Mahaprabhu was extremely pleased to see him and after offering His obeisances He invited him to stay for lunch. Isvara Puri replied that, "Being able to accept foodstuffs from Your hand is a matter of great fortune for me." Mahaprabhu Himself cooked and then very carefully served His guru the prasadam. Afterwards he smeared sandalwood paste on his body and put a garland of flowers around his neck. Thus the Supreme Lord Himself taught how one should serve his guru. Without serving the great devotees, it is not possible to receive love of Godhead. Service to the guru is the door to devotion.
On his return from Gaya, Mahaprabhu came by way of Kumarhatta, the birthplace of His guru, and began to roll on the ground in ecstasy there, as the ground became wet with His tears. Finally He collected some dust from that holy place and bound it in the corner of his upper garment, saying, "This dust is as dear to me as My life."  then he set out for Navadwipa.
The birthplace of Srila Isvara Puri is located within the present town of Halyahor, which is near the Kanchra-para rail station, which is on the Sealdah -Krsnanagar line. One should get down at Kanchra-para station and then proceed by rickshaw to Caitanya Doha. Doha means pond, which is what was created when many followers of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, following in His footsteps, came here and collected earth from the birthplace of Srila Isvara Puri.
Thereafter Mahaprabhu accepted sannyasa and by the order of His mother came to live at Jagannath Puri. By this time Isvara Puri had already left this world. He sent two of his disciples Sri Govinda and Kasisvara brahmacari to serve the Lord at Nilacala.

Maha Shivratri, which literally translates to “great night of Shiva” is a Hindu festival largely celebrated in India as well as in Nepal. The festival is celebrated on the new moon day in the month of Maagha according to the Hindu calendar. The day is celebrated to venerate Lord Shiva, an important deity in Hindu culture. There are many mythological legends associated with this day. According to a popular legend, when a hunter could not find anything to kill for his food in a forest, he waited on the branch of a Woodapple tree. In order to attract deer, he started throwing the leaves of the tree on the ground, unaware that there was a Shiva Lingam beneath the tree. Pleased with the Woodapple leaves and the patience of the hunter, it is believed that Lord Shiva appeared in front of the hunter and blessed him with wisdom. From that day onwards, the hunter stopped eating meat. Another legend has it that after the Earth was faced with an imminent destruction, Goddess Parvati pledged with Lord Shiva to save the world. Pleased with her prayers, Lord Shiva agreed to save the world on the pretext that the people of the Earth would have to worship him with dedication and passion. From that day onwards, the night came to be known as Maha Shivratri and people began worshipping Shiva with a great enthusiasm. Some folklore also consider this to be Shiva’s day as this was believed to be the answer given by Lord Shiva when asked about his favorite day by Goddess Parvati. Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival which is celebrated by people following Hinduism in India. People often fast on the night of Shivratri and sing hymns and praises in the name of Lord Shiva. Hindu temples across the country are decorated with lights and colorful decorations and people can be seen offering night long prayers to Shiva Lingam. Woodapple leaves, cold water and milk are offered to the Shiva Lingam on this day as they are believed to be Lord Shiva’s favorite. It is believed that the people who fast on this night and offer prayers to Lord Shiva bring good luck into their life. The most popular Maha Shivratri celebrations take place in Ujjain, believed to be the place of residence of Lord Shiva. Large processions are carried out throughout the city, with people thronging the streets to catch a glimpse of the revered idol of Lord Shiva.

I love Vrindavana 5

I love Vrindavana 5, by Javier Figuerola or Haripada dasaBy the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and Srimati Radharani I am now in Sri Vrindavana Dhama , from the spiritual world send a greeting , by the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and Srimati Radharani during the years 2013 and 2014 our ong food for world peace has given 3,360 euros donation to the food For Life program of Vrindavana to distribute prasada or food in our schools. He came to visit a friend of mine from my hometown of Spain and today we have been distributing food to 680 children. When you go to Sri Vrindavana dhama enters another dimension, as the great master Srila Narottama Dasa espirual Thakura says: "When my conscience is pure I can see Vrindavana ." By the mercy of Srila Prabhupada understand and agree that the pure devotees of Vrindavan love God or Krishna in a spontaneous way , we read in the book of Krishna that the inhabitants of Vrindavana sometimes say wonderful are Krishna and Balarama maybe they are expansions God or great demigods . And in the Srimad Bhagavatam Srila Sukadeva Goswami says these cowherd of Vrindavan that are uploaded to the shoulders of God or Krishna and are always playing with him have achieved this position after practicing devotional service for millions and millions of lives. The Srimad Bhagavatam is pure personalist philosophy , that the relationships of God and His devotees in His various incarnations are described why Srila Sankaracharya never touched the Srimad Bhagavatam , there is no place for impersonalism .OM TAT SAT PEACE AND WELL

Poem one before Srila prabhupada came to the west:

Vṛndāvana Bhajana
Verse 1.
I am sitting alone in Vṛndāvana-dhāma In this mood I am getting many realizations. I have my wife, sons, daughters, grandsons, everything, But I have no money so they are a fruitless glory. Kṛṣṇa has shown me the naked form of material nature, By his strength it has all become tasteless to me today. yasyāham anugṛhṇāmi hariṣye tad-dhanaṁ śanaiḥ “I gradually take away all the wealth of those upon whom I am merciful.” How was I able to understand this mercy of the All-merciful?
Verse 2.
Everyone has abandoned me, seeing me as penniless, Wife, relatives, friends, brothers, everyone. This is misery, but it gives me a laugh. I sit alone and laugh. In this māyā-saṁsāra, whom do I really love? Where have all my loving father and mother gone to now? And where are all my elders, who were my own folk? Who will give me news of them, tell me who? All that is left of this family life is a list of names.
Verse 3.
Like the froth on the sea water mixes again in the sea, Māyā’s saṁsāra’s play is just like that. No one is mother or father, or personal relative, Just like the sea-foam they remain but a short time, Just as the froth on sea water mixes again in the sea, The body made of five elements meets with destruction. How many bodies does the embodied soul take in this way; His relatives are all simply related to this temporal body.
Verse 4.
But everyone is your relative, brother? on the spiritual platform. This relationship is not tinged with the smell of māyā. The Supreme Lord is the soul of everyone, In relation to Him, everyone in the universe is the same. All your relatives, brother! All the billions of jīvas. When seen in relation to Kṛṣṇa they are all in harmony. Forgetting Kṛṣṇa, the jīva desires for sense gratification, And as a result he is firmly grasped by māyā.
Verse 5.
As a result of past activities he takes on different types of body. Absorbed in that dress he remains forgetful of Śrī Hari. Therefore māyā gives him so many kinds of miseries And although he bobs up and down in this ocean of misery, he still thinks that he is happy. Lying on a bed, suffering greatly, having been sick a long time “I am very well today,” he says laughing. I get a laugh out of his “feeling very well” This is the way the soul conditioned by māyā feels “well”
Verse 6.
How many plans they have to remain “well” But time and time again nature destroys them. daivī hy eṣā guṇamayī that is the Supreme Lord’s māyā. Try to understand exactly the meaning of their “feeling well”; No one is well in the whole world, but still they are saying In this way māyā cheats the conditioned soul. But, ignoring that he is being cheated, he remains absorbed in māyā; And although māyā kicks him, he will not give up his mistaken conception.
Verse 7.
Again and again making plans, and again and again they are destroyed. Sometimes he falls on the dry earth and sometimes in the mud. In this way the universe is filled with wandering jīva souls who finally by the grace of Guru and Kṛṣṇa get bhakti-the eternal wealth. Gaining that wealth if they can give up all other so-called wealth, Then very easily he crosses over the ocean of saṁsāra. There on the other side is unparalled spiritual variegatedness. There he enjoys in eternal happiness and peace.
Verse 8.
The mad say, “There everything is formless, Without special feature like a kind of nothing.” He is actually the storehouse of spiritual tastes—raso vai saḥ The intelligent knowers of tastes serves him becoming his subordinate Śānta, dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya are those tastes and The best of all, mādhurya, is the essence of them all. But in the spiritual world all these tastes are relishable, Whereas the material tastes are just shadow reflections and are all contemptible.
Verse 9.
One who worships Kṛṣṇa is clever But one who worships māyā is a pauper. Becoming a pauper one engages in temporary pastimes Without knowledge of the true relationships of things he simply becomes bound up in māyā’s knot. Arjuna and Duryodhana both fought in the same war, But Arjuna was the best devotee and Duryodhana died. on one battlefield both dear and detestable One who is intelligent will be able to understand.
Verse 10.
One who fights the war of life knowing his true relationship, He will remain alive while all others will perish. One who does not know his relationship, and takes up some other path, He will never attain love of god, and his whole life is useless. First understand properly your relationship with Kṛṣṇa And then keeping that relationship, go and fight with māyā. Other than this all the heroes of jñāna and karma Never attained liberation, they were all uncertain.
Verse 11.
In name only they were great sober and unaffected men, They were all unpeaceful. Desiring liberation, sense gratification or mystic powers, all had uncontrolled senses. The uncontrolled senses don’t answer to the potency of yoga. How many yogis and munis there were, and always the senses remained independent. Without service of the master of the senses there can be no sense control. They all return to material activities after a short term of peace. By the process of yoga, no one ever attains sense control. This is explained extensively in the Vedas and Purāṇas.
Verse 12.
Viśvāmitra sat on the yogic āsana But he desired the pure beauty Śakuntalā. In this way the yogis fall down, what to speak of the jñānīs And the karmīs are all just asses, suffering in all respects. The one to whom Kṛṣṇa is merciful and gives His instruction, Becomes equally as fortunate as Arjuna. But one who fights for his own happiness’ sake He, like Duryodhana, dies along with his family.
Verse 13.
One who always fights on behalf of Kṛṣṇa, Wealth, power, knowledge are all within his grasp. Understand properly the Gītā’s message You will attain Kṛṣṇa’s service and will worship Śrī Hari, The devotees are endowed with all qualities, So what are “non-violence” or “freedom from anger” to them?
Verse 14.
Śrī Hari teaches the living entities by means of his devotees, one such helper is Pārtha. Arjuna acted just like a conditioned soul Like one bewildered was the Pāṇḍava brother Violence to his relatives and then enjoyment of the Kingdom Could this be happiness? Arjuna showed lamentation. This though, was all dehātma-buddhiḥ identification with the body one who is a kṣatriya gives up such family affection on the battlefield.
Verse 15.
Kṛṣṇa, seeing his illusion, chastised him Therefore Arjuna accepted the position of disciple Becoming a disciple he listened to the Bhagavad-gītā. All his ignorance dissipated as well as his material bondage. His material bondage was cut, but he was not dressed as a sannyāsī. The householders understand the Gītā’s meaning this way. The perfection of mantras, kariṣye vacanaṁ tava Therefore the war that he fought brought him an increase in fame.
Verse 16.
The Vaiṣṇavas have no desire, they all chant japa on their beads. So what kind of Vaiṣṇava is this Arjuna in the middle of saṁsāra? The Vaiṣṇava freed from duality simply chants japa on his beads, So say those who are eating the mind’s bananas. The Vaiṣṇava is without desire, and amicable by nature But he is not a forceless weakling as people foolishly think. In two great Indian wars, two great personalities; Leaders amongst the Vaiṣṇavas and were victorious.
Verse 17.
Because of desire for the satisfaction of his own senses he would not fight. But he is one who is known by everyone as a Vaiṣṇava. Those who do not see the real Vaiṣṇavas say that a Vaiṣṇava is inactive. But the Vaiṣṇava is always active in the service of the Lord. The lifeless kaniṣṭha-adhikārīs don’t perform any service. For profit adoration and prestige they stay in their lonely place, Nityānanda prabhu, who is worshipable by the Vaiṣṇavas Suffered blows, but still distributed love of God one after the other.
Verse 18.
Gaura Hari came with the cakra in His hand and gave punishment, After that the Vaiṣṇava haters were subdued. The Lord sets example Himself to teach the jīvas So one who performs nirjana bhajana simply cheats himself. The world has now become full of Jagāis and Mādhāis The Nityānanda Vaṁśa has increased its following of disciples. But eating, sleeping, wearing the dress, but remaining unconcerned It is not proper for the Vaiṣṇavas to remain so uncompassionate.
Verse 19.
Śrīla Cakravartī Ṭhākura says in his Mādhurya Kaḍambinī Just see his conclusion and what is his judgement. Devotional service is causeless and self-manifesting But the Eternally Perfect Substance is always covered over. The madhyama-adhikārī therefore being compassionate Gives mercy to the innocent souls by awakening devotion in them. The Supreme Lord acts according to the will of the Vaiṣṇavas, Therefore by the mercy of the Vaiṣṇavas the bewildered can be awakened.
Verse 20.
The Vaiṣṇavas can awaken the sleeping world By their mercy the sinful can all become devotees. Therefore they do not perform nirjana bhajana, That is the world cheating process of the kaniṣṭha-adhikārī All the big big famous vaishnavas were in assembly And Padri Saheb came in to meet them He asked some questions about Kṛṣṇa’s līlā in Vṛndāvana But that association of venerable Vaiṣṇavas was not able to enlighten him as to the real truth.
Verse 21.
The kaniṣṭha-adhikārīs do not understand these scriptures In the false pride of being alone they simply hunt for chapatis and dal. Our spiritual master said these are all kaniṣṭha Now I can understand the truth of what he said. One well versed in the scripture and who has strong faith Is an uttama-adhikārī and can deliver the whole world. He is the deliverer of the most fallen and is famous through the world. Now, save this fallen one and thus become really famed.
Verse 22.
In the Kali-yuga the jīvas are all fallen and the lowest of mankind. Seeing they do not see the different activities The Supreme Lord Gaurasundara is the most magnanimous And His instructions are all full of nectar. One who has taken his birth in the land of Bharata Should engage in welfare activities according to His instructions. The Supreme Lord’s līlā was to relish mellows in the nirajana But it is not the play of Vaiṣṇavas to imitate these activities.
Verse 23.
This transcendental service cannot actually be tasted by those who are not Vaiṣṇavas. In the material body one cannot relish this transcendental nectar. One who has the material concept that the body is his self Cannot relish spiritual mellows. But those who have conceptions of the Vaiṣṇavas in terms of birth etc. Are very bold when it comes to relishing the līlās of the Lord. Like the clerk in the post office, one caste goswami. The bābājīs all pay their obeisances to him a lot.
Verse 24.
The Gosāi Ṭhākura has false pride in his birth Which Nityānanda Prabhu cut into pieces. I see all these things going on in Vṛndāvana Therefore I can understand that there is some work to be done here The prākṛta-sahajiyās all commit adultery Taking someone else’s wife they go to relish transcendental līlā. This is not Vṛndāvana as always think like this my dear mind Remember the Lotus feet of the six gosvāmīs.
Verse 25.
The six gosvāmīs came and preached religious life They saved the process of devotional service on the order of Lord Caitanya. They are all eternally perfect associates of the Lord and always remember Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa Remembering them all the conditioned souls sins are cleared away But if he tries to imitate them taking on their dress and characteristics He becomes the plaything of māyā and does not cross over the material ocean Always preach! From jīva’s door to door Your life will be successful as a result of your preaching.
Verse 26.
Śrī Dayitā dāsa prabhu gave this instruction “Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa loudly, this is my initiation: Kīrtana is not just drums and karatālas The sound of kīrtana is not this modern system Anything favourable for devotional service is all Mādhava And the only enjoyer of the three worlds is Yadava Māyā’s pride and joy, the radio sound Destroy them all by forceful kīrtana.
Verse 27.
Māyā’s is all these newspapers Preach that throughout the whole world. Sitting alone in your room shouting, you may increase your bile’s secretion But in ten million births Śrī Hari won’t be pleased. Śrī Hari is no one’s father’s property Come out of your cage, stop making objection Everything belongs to Śrī Hari and Śrī Hari belongs to everyone. Chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra loudly By the performance of such saṅkīrtana there will come remembrance automatically Then there will be nirjana bhajana manifested in the heart spontaneously.

Poem 2 on Jaladhuta:

Poem by Srila Prabhupada on His First Arrival in the USA

In the following poem, written in Bengali on the day of his arrival in the USA, Srila Prabhupada addresses the Supreme Lord Krsna, asking Him His purpose in sending His servant to America. The translation from Bengali was done by Srila Prabhupada himself.

As Follows;

1) My dear Lord Krsna, You are so kind upon this useless soul, but I do not know why You have brought me here. Now You can do whatever You like with me.

2) But I can guess that You have some business here, otherwise why should You call me to this demoniac place?

3) Most of the population here is covered by nature’s modes of ignorance and passion, and I do not know how they will be able to understand the transcendental message of Vasudeva.

4) But I know that Your causeless mercy can make everything possible because You are the most expert mystic.

5) Therefore, I am simply praying for Your mercy so that I can be able to convince them about Your message.

6) All living entities have come under the control of the illusory energy by Your will, and therefore, if You like, by Your will they can also be released from the clutches of illusion.

7) If You so desire, I wish that You may deliver them ; just by Your desire they will be able to understand Your message.

8) The words of Srimad-Bhagavatam are Your incarnation, and if they receive them in submissive aural reception, repeatedly, then they will be able to understand Your message.

9-13) In the Srimad-Bhagavatam, First Canto, Second Chapter, verses seventeen through twenty-one, it is said: “For anyone who gives aural reception to the always auspicious transcendental messages about You by hearing and chanting, You become a special well-wisher, and thus, remaining within his heart, You clear up all inauspicious understanding. When such inauspicious understanding is almost cleared up, a person realizes the importance of devotional service. In that stage of understanding, the influence of the modes of ignorance and passion becomes almost nil, and the resultant action of passion and ignorance can no more attack the heart; thus he becomes joyful, being situated on the platform of goodness. When, by dint of devotional service, he thus becomes jubilant due to awakening the modes of goodness, he becomes liberated from material contamination and is able to understand the science of God. In this stage of liberation, all misgivings in the heart, or the bondage of the material network, become cut to pieces, and by the science of God he is elevated from all sorts of doubts. At this stage the result of past activities becomes vanquished because of his realization of the Supreme Lord.”

14) This is the process of becoming liberated from the influence of the modes of ignorance and passion, and thus they can become freed from all inauspicious things accumulated in the heart.

15) But because I am very unfortunate, unqualified, and the most fallen, I am therefore seeking Your benediction so that I may be able to convince them about this Krsna consciousness.

16) Somehow or other, You have brought me here to speak about You. Now it is up to You to make me a success or failure, as You like.

17) You are the Lord of the whole creation, so if You like You can make my power to speak suitable, so that they can understand.

18) By Your causeless mercy only my words may become transcendentally pure, and I am sure that when such a transcendental message penetrates their hearts, certainly they will feel engladdened and thus become liberated from all unhappy conditions of life.

19) I am just like a puppet in Your hands; You have brought me here, and now You can make me dance as You like.

20) I have no devotion, nor have I any knowledge, but still I have been designated Bhaktivedanta. Now if You like You can just fulfill the real purport of Bhaktivedanta.

The most unfortunate, insignificant beggar, Bhaktivedanta Swami, onboard the ship Jaladuta, Commonwealth Pier, Boston, Massachusetts (U.S.A.).
Dated 18th September, 1965.

Always in your service at Srila Prabhupada`s service.

SRILA PURUSHOTTAMA DASA THAKURA KI JAYA

Purushottama Dasa Thakura – Biography
Disappearance Day of Shri Purushottama Das Thakura

sadasivasuto namna nagarah purusottamah
vaidya-vamsodbhavo namna dama yo vallavo vraje

Purushottama Dasa Thakura 4.jpg
For four generations the family of Purushottam Das consisted of eternally perfect direct associates of Mahaprabhu: Kamsari Sen, Sadashiva Kaviraj, Purushottam Thakur, and Kanu Thakur. The Gaura-ganodesha-dipika identifies Kamsari Sen as Ratnavali Sakhi and Sadashiva Kaviraj as Chandravali (156). (In the image: Krishna Chandravali, Rithora).

SRILA BHAKTISIDDHANTA SARASWATI THAKURA PRABHUPADA KI AJYA

Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura
Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, the guru of Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, appeared in Sri Ksetra Dhama.(Jagannatha Puri) on 6 February 1874 as the son of Srila Sacidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura. In his childhood he quickly mastered the Vedas, memorized the Bhdgavad-gita, and relished his father's philosophical works. He became known as "The Living Encyclopedia" for his vast knowledge.

He preached convincingly against casteism and philosophical deviations from Gaudiya Vaisnavism. He tried to unite the four Vaisnava sampradayas by publishing their teachings. Srila Sarasvati Thakura earned the title Nrisimha Guru for his fearless and powerful delivery of the Vaisnava siddhanta. Mayavadis would cross the street to avoid confronting the "lion guru." Besides being a courageous preacher, he was ornamented with all divine qualities and full of ecstatic love of God. He established 64 Gaudiya Math temples in India and centers in Burma, England, Germany.
Srila Sarasvati Thakura excavated Lord Caitanya's appearance place at the Yogapitha in Sridhama Mayapur, despite heavy opposition from the money-hungry caste Goswamis of Navadvipa. He built a beautiful Gaudiya Math temple there.

Yoga Pitha - Appearance Place of Lord Chaitania, Mayapur.

His three "Brhat-mrdangas" (printing presses) in Madras, Calcutta, Krishna-nagara used to pump out books, magazines, and newspapers to spread the message of Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu.

When asked why he printed a daily spiritual newspaper entitled Nadia Prakash, Srila Sarasvati Thakura replied, "If an insignificant city can produce five daily newspapers, then why can't we publish a newspaper every 'Second about the eternal, ever-fresh transcendental activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His unlimited spiritual planet, Goloka Vrindavana?"
Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur
Sri Chaitania Gaudiya Math, Mayapur.

Apart from his father's writings, he published many authorized sastras: Bhagavad-gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, Caitanya Bhagavata, Caitanya Mangala, Prema-bhakti-candrika, and his favorite book Sri Caitanya-caritamrta. He predicted that foreigners would learn Bengali to relish the nectar left by Srila Krishna Dasa Kaviraja in the Caitanya-caritamrta.

He introduced many innovations to expand preaching. All over India he staged free theistic exhibits and dioramas depicting the pastimes of, Sri Krishna and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Employing the latest technology, he even had animated dolls. To commemorate the many holy places visited by Lord Caitanya he installed marble impressions of the Lord's lotus feet. Breaking tradition, he let his sannyasis wear tailored kurtas and overcoats, ride in cars and motor-boats, and carry Mahaprabhu's message across the sea to Europe.

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saravati's revolutionary preaching ideas sprang from the sastrie principle of yukta-vairagya set forth by the rasa acarya, Srila Rupa Gosvami. Being an eternally liberated soul, Srila Sarasvati Thakura knew how to perfectly engage Maya (the illusory energy) in the service of Lord Krishna.
Following Srila Thakura Bhaktivinoda's footsteps, he preached daivi varnashrama to harmonize society and provide spiritual fulfillment for all. Advocating the teachings of Sri Rupa and Sri Raghunatha Dasa Goswamis, he taught the science of devotional service, and showed thousands how to attain pure love for Sri-Sri Gandharvika-Giridhari (Radha-Krishna).
Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur
Srila Prabhupada was ordered by his Guru to preach Krishna Consciousness in English. And he fulfilled that desire.

Aside from his phenomenal preaching success in India, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's greatest. contribution was Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, whom he initiated and inspired to distribute Krishna consciousness all over the world. When Srila Prabhupada was asked to describe his spiritual master Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, he said, "What can I say? He was a Vaikuntha man."
In Radha-Govinda's eternal pastimes in Goloka Vrndavana, Srila Sarasvati Thakura serves as Nayana-mani manjari. His pushpa samadhis are at Radha-kunda and Radha Damodara.

Share by Javier Figuerola or Haripada Dasa BrahmachariSrila Prabhupada told the Yamuna mother if you do not share with others what you know you will become envious . Another interesting point is that Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Prabhupada always said that when you preach Krishna consciousness only a few people will be receptive . And Srila Prabhupada says at the end of his preface to the Bhagavad Gita that if we are able to make only a pure devotee of Lord Krishna and our mission will have been a success. I remember hearing once Srila Prabhupada was preaching Krishna consciousness to a very important family in India , and received very well to Srila Prabhupada and was given a gift, and when he finished preaching a devotee asked him what he thought everything, and Srila Prabhupada said that this family is pious , but do not have much interest in Krishna consciousness , nobody asked any questions when one is asking questions that are interested . In connection with this subject is very interesting what you said in the book of Krishna at the end of the chapter entitled enters Mathura Krishna : "Clearly a devotee of Lord Krishna consciousness should not be satisfied simply with their own progress in devotional service , but must be willing and eager to work for the welfare of all other people , devotees of God are not selfish . Krishna consciousness is the largest of all humanitarian activities "Another point is that we must be very detached from the result of our preaching , here is the only preaching Srila Prabhupada and us if we are able to repeat your message will have all the blessings of Srila Prabhupada and the entire guru- parampara. Srila Prabhupada always said that we do not have to invent anything , we just repeat the message of the guru- parampara , and build relationships with other devotees based on spiritual love and trust .OM TAT SAT PEACE AND WELL

SRILA NAROTTAMA DASA THAKURA KI JAYA

Narottama dasa Thakura – Biography

Narottama Dasa Thakura
From his early childhood, Narottama began to display symptoms of his future greatness. Everyone was amazed to see his great intelligence and his devotional demeanor. (In the image: Shrila Narottana Dasa Thakura).

A brahmachari for his entire life, Narottama Das visited all the places of pilgrimage. He was on the highest platform of devotional achievement. (Bhakti-ratnakara 1.256)

Narottama Thakur was Champaka Manjari in Krishna-lila. Eternally assisting Rupa Manjari in her service to Radha and Krishna, Champaka Manjari had mercy on the conditioned souls of this earth and appeared as Narottama in the village of Kheturi, about twelve miles from Rampur Bowaliya in the Gopalpur subdivision of Rajshahi district. This took place on the full moon day of the month of Magh sometime around the middle of the 15th century of the Shaka era.

Narottama was born on the Maghi Purnima. From that day on he thrived and grew like the waxing moon. (Bhakti-ratnakara 1.281)

Narottama’s father was Raja Krishnananda Datta, the zamindar of the Gopalpur area. His mother’s name was Narayani Devi. Raja Krishnananda had a younger brother named Purushottam Datta, who had a son named Santosha. In order to show that His associates can take birth in any caste, Krishna had Narottama take birth in a kayastha family.

From his early childhood, Narottama began to display symptoms of his future greatness. Everyone was amazed to see his great intelligence and his devotional demeanor. He was constantly absorbed in meditation on the wonderful qualities of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu. The Lord and His associates appeared to him in his dreams.

As tears poured from his eyes, Narottama would offer prayers of surrender to Shri Krishna Chaitanya, Nityananda, Advaita and the other associates of the Lord. Finally, the Lord and His associates appeared to him in a dream and consoled him with kind words. (Bhakti-ratnakara 1.285-6)

Mahaprabhu Leaves Prema Behind for Narottama

According to the Premavilasa, when Mahaprabhu passed through Kanair Natashala, as He was dancing ecstatically in kirtan, He began to call out the name Narottama. When Nityananda asked Him why He was calling out this name, Mahaprabhu answered, “My Lord. You do not know your own glories. When we went to Jagannath Puri, you shed tears out of divine love, day after day. I managed to capture your divine love and save it. Now I wish to keep it here by the Padmavati River for Narottama Das.”
Narottama Dasa Thakura
“O Padmavati! Take my love and keep it here. When Narottama comes and bathes here, give it to him.” (In the wallpaper: The Padmavati River, Lord Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu).

Mahaprabhu then went on to the Padmavati River to the place known as Kutubpur, where He bathed and sang and danced in ecstasy. He then called out to the river, “O Padmavati! Take my love and keep it here. When Narottama comes and bathes here, give it to him.”

The Padmavati inquired, “How will I recognize him?”

Mahaprabhu answered, “You will know it is Narottama, for when he enters your waters, you will overflow.”

The place where Mahaprabhu placed prema for Narottama’s sake was later given the name Prematali. When Narottama was twelve years old, he had a dream in which Nityananda Prabhu told him to bathe in the Padmavati and take the prema which had been stored there for him. He went the next day to the Padma and as soon as he put his foot in the water, the river started to overflow. The Padmavati then remembered Mahaprabhu’s words and gave Narottama the prema which she had been safeguarding for him.

Narottama Leaves Home

As soon as he experienced the ecstasies of prema, Narottama’s character, his appearance, everything about him changed. His parents noticed the transformation and did everything they could to bring him back to his normal state, but failed. Having drunk the wine of divine ecstasy, Narottama had become intoxicated and the bonds of family life could no longer hold him back.
Narottama Dasa Thakura
After saying this, the Brahmin vanished and the exhausted Narottama finally fell asleep. That night, he dreamt of Rupa and Sanatan Goswami. The two Goswamis placed their hands on his chest and fed him the milk that Mahaprabhu Himself had brought him. All of Narottama’s fatigue disappeared. (In the image: Rupa and Sanatana Goswamis).

Narottama began to wonder how he could escape from his material entanglements. Finally, one day when his father and uncle were away on official business, he practiced some deception on his mother and tricked his bodyguards so that he could leave his family for Vrindavan. It was the full-moon day of Karttik when this event took place.

According to others, Narottama waited to go to Vrindavan until after the death of his father when his cousin Santosha was given the responsibility for the zamindari. Even though he was the son of a rich zamindar, in his desire to unite with the Lord, he was ready to abandon the pleasures of the body in a moment. Day and night, he cried, walking barefoot, forgetting to eat and to drink until finally he would fall unconscious under a tree. One golden-skinned Brahmin came and offered him a cup of milk and said to him in a sweet voice, “O Narottama, drink this milk. Your cuts and bruises will go away. Take it easy.”

Narottama is Initiated by Lokanatha Goswami

The Prema-vilasa also describes how Narottama took initiation from Lokanatha Goswami. Narottama was born on Maghi purnima, his renunciation took place on the Karttik purnima, and he was initiated by Lokanatha on the Shravan purnima.

Lokanatha Goswami is considered to be a personal associate of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Indeed, he was the first Gaudiya Vaishnava to be instructed by the Lord to go to Vrindavan, along with Bhugarbha Goswami. Lokanatha set the standard for worship in a spirit of renunciation while in the dham. He was a viviktanandi Vaishnava, i.e., he took pleasure in worshiping the Lord in solitude. In this spirit, he had vowed not to take any disciples. Narottama Das too made a vow — to take initiation from no one other than Lokanatha. Though he was the son of a raja, Narottama’s desire to receive Lokanatha’s mercy was so great that he went in the middle of every night to clean the place he used as a toilet. He would also leave fine earth and water for him to clean himself afterward. This is described as follows in the Prema-vilasa:

He went to the place where the Goswami performed his bodily functions and did a special job of cleaning it. He sifted the earth to make fine, clean earth with which Lokanatha could clean his hands. He did this as a regular service. He would hide the broom of coconut leaves in the earth and each night take them out to sweep the place, his heart filled with joy. He considered himself fortunate and his body worthwhile. He would hold the broom to his chest, repeating, “This is the power that will help me attain my Lord’s lotus feet.” As he said these words, he cried and torrents of tears washed over his chest.

(In the wallpaper: A statue).

Lokanatha was astonished to see that the place was daily being kept clean. He became curious to find out who it was and so, one evening, he went and hid in the jungle, chanting japa the entire night in wait for the anonymous benefactor. At midnight, he saw someone engaged in cleaning the place and asked him who he was. When he found out that Narottama, the son of a raja, was doing such a filthy task, he felt embarrassed and told him to desist. Narottama, however, immediately fell at Lokanatha’s feet began to cry. When Lokanatha saw Narottama’s humility and pain, his resolve softened and gave him initiation. Thus Narottama gave an outstanding example to the world of how one should behave in the service of one’s spiritual master.

At that moment, Narottama went there and with great enthusiasm, engaged in the necessary service to his guru. Lokanatha was pleased with his service and initiated him in the mantra, demonstrating the greatest mercy on Narottama. (Bhakti-ratnakara 1.345-6)

Without caring for his youth or his physical beauty, he left home on the full moon day of the month of Karttik. After wandering through many pilgrimage places, he finally came to Vrindavan where he became Lokanatha Goswami’s disciple. On the auspicious day of Shravani purnima, Lokanatha initiated Narottama.

Thus Narottama Das was Lokanatha’s one and only disciple. The founder of the world-wide Gaudiya Maths and the flagship monastery in Mayapur, the Chaitanya Math, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur, similarly demonstrated a determination and patience in service to his spiritual master in order to convince him to accept him as a disciple. Gaura Kishora Das Babaji, like Lokanatha, had vowed to take no disciples. He refused Shrila Prabhupada three times, but this did not break Prabhupada’s will. When Gaura Kishora saw his humility and intense desire, he finally relented and gave him mantra diksha. Shrila Prabhupada was Gaura Kishora Das’s only disciple.

After the disappearance of Rupa and Sanatan Goswamis, Shri Jiva Goswami became the undisputed intellectual leader of all Gaudiya Vaishnavas throughout Mathura, Bengal and Orissa and the chief-minister of the universal court of Vaishnavas at Vrindavan — the Vishva-vaishnava-raja-sabha. Shrinivas Acharya, Narottama Das, and Duhkhi Krishna Das all studied the scriptures under Jiva, receiving detailed personal instruction from him. When their studies were completed, Jiva gave them the titles of Acharya, Thakur and Shyamananda, respectively.

Narottama Returns to Bengal

After their studies were complete, Jiva sent his three students to Bengal with the Vaishnava scriptures. Shri Jiva heard the news that the books had been stolen in Bana Vishnupura and then later that they had been recovered. This story has been told in this book on pages 165 to 166 in the chapter on Shrinivas.

Lokanatha Goswami considered Narottama’s previous life as a wealthy zamindar to be particularly suitable for preaching in his home area of northern Bengal and thought that with his status he would be able to teach the standards of renounced devotional behavior. Out of compassion for that country’s people, he ordererd Narottama to return to his home town of Kheturi. Shrinivas was aware of Lokanatha’s intention, so when the books were stolen, he told Narottama to continue on his way to Kheturi. Shrinivas Acharya said, “Go quickly to Kheturi and carry out Lokanatha’s orders.” (Bhakti-ratnakara 7.119)

Anchorite Devotees (viviktanandis), being absorbed in the intimate service of the Lord on the transcendental platform, normally have no taste for engaging in any welfare activity which brings only temporary succor to materialistic persons, bound by Maya and absorbed in their bodily identification. Materialistic welfare activities are considered to be of great value only when there is a misunderstanding about the real goal of life–service to Krishna. Lokanatha taught the world through his disciple, on the principle that  “a housewife teaches the daughter-in-law by instructing the daughter.” Though Narottama himself was distraught with separation from his spiritual master, he nevertheless took his order seriously and returned to Kheturi where he began preaching the doctrines of pure devotional service to the people of northern Bengal. Narottama revealed his emotional state somewhat in his Prarthana,
Narottama Dasa Thakura
If you would only be merciful to me and grab me by the hair, pulling me back into Vraja-dham. Then everything will seem right once more, otherwise, Narottama says, his life is over. (In the wallpaper: Shrimati Radharani, ISKCON Chowpatty, Mumbai).

aneka duhkhera pare, layechile vraja-pure
kripa-dora galaya bandhiya
daiva-maya balatkare, khasaiya sei dore
bhavakupe dileka dariya
punah yadi kripa kari, e janare keshe dhari
taniya tulaha vraja-dhame
tabe se dekhiye bhala, natuba parana gela

After a great deal of suffering, you finally dragged me to Vraja-dham, tying the rope of mercy around my neck. But now, the forces of fate and illusion have loosened that rope and thrown me back down the well of material existence.

If you would only be merciful to me and grab me by the hair, pulling me back into Vraja-dham. Then everything will seem right once more, otherwise, Narottama says, his life is over.

On Lokanatha Goswami’s orders, Narottama installed six sets of Deities in his Temple in Kheturi: Gauranga, Vallabhikanta, Vrajamohana, Shri Krishna, Radhakanta, and Radharamana. The great festival which he held on that occasion is still remembered in the Vaishnava world.

Narottama arrived in Gauda-desha. He had been ordered by Lokanatha to establish the Deity service of both Gauranga and Krishna, to serve the Vaishnavas and to preach the congregational chanting of the Holy Names. He immediately dedicated himself to carrying out these orders. First he set about establishing the service of six sets of beautiful Deities, whose names, taken together, bring joy to the heart of the Devotees:

gauranga vallabhi-kanta shri-krishna vraja-mohana
radha-ramana he radhe radha-kanta namo’stu te
(Bhakti-ratnakara 1.422-6)

The Great Festival at Kheturi

Prior to the Kheturi-mahotsava, Narottama Das Thakur traveled throughout Bengal and Orissa, visiting various places where Mahaprabhu had performed His pastimes, meeting the Lord’s associates and receiving their blessings. Amongst the places he visited were Uddharan Datta’s home in Saptagram; Khardaha, where he met Parameshvari Das, and Nityananda’s shaktis, Jahnava and Vasudha; Khanakula Krishnanagara, the home of Abhiram Thakur; Shyamananda’s home in Nrisinghapura; the Shripatas of Narahari and Raghunandan in Shrikhanda; and the birthplace of Nityananda Prabhu in Ekachakra-dham; Gopinath Acharya’s home, Hari Das Thakur’s samadhi tomb, Gadadhara Pandit’s place of worship, the Jagannath Temple and Gundicha, the Jagannath-vallabha gardens, Narendra-sarovara, etc. in Jagannath Puri.

Most of the living associates of Mahaprabhu and other leaders of the sampradaya came to Kheturi on the occasion of the festival organized by Narottama Das. A list of these has been given by Narahari Chakravarti in his books, Bhakti-ratnakara and Narottama-vilasa: Shyamananda Prabhu, Jahnava Devi, Parameshvari Das, Krishna Das Sarkhela (Jahnava’s uncle), Madhava Acharya (Nityananda’s son-in-law), Raghupati Vaidya, Minaketan Rama Das, Murari Chaitanya Das, Jnana Das, Mahidhara, Shri Shankara, Kamalakara Pippalai, Gauranga Das, Nakarii, Krishna Das, Damodar, Balaram Das, Shri Mukunda, Vrindavan Das Thakur; Raghunandan Thakur and other Devotees from Shrikhanda; Shripati and Shrinidhi (Shrivasa’s brothers) came from Navadwip; Advaita’s sons, Achyutananda, Gopal Mishra and Krishna Mishra came from Shantipur; Hriday Chaitanya and other Devotees from Ambika Kalna, etc.

Shrinivas Acharya acted as the officiating priest at the festival and performed the rituals installing the Deities. In the kirtan led by Narottama which followed, Mahaprabhu and His associates themselves appeared.

Who can describe the joy of that kirtan? Mahaprabhu Himself and His associates all became incarnate just like lightning in a conglomeration of rainclouds. (Bhakti-ratnakara 10.571-2)

The kirtan was amazing: you could see Nityananda Prabhu and Advaita Acharya overcome with ecstasy and Gauranga, encircled by the Devotees. What wonderful compassion the Lord displayed on that day! Who can understand these wonderful pastimes? What blessings He poured on Narottama and Shrinivas, for they and their companions found the fulfillment of all their desires. (Bhakti-ratnakara 10.605-7)

After the Kheturi festival, Narottama’s fame spread throughout the Vaishnava world. Prominent Brahmins like Ramakrishna Acharya and Ganga-Narayan Chakravarti became his disciples.

Narottama’s Preaching Adventures

Narottama Dasa Thakura
In Gopalpura village, there was a Brahmin named Vipra Das. He had a poisonous snake living in his wicker grain-storage bin (gola). When Narottama visited Vipra Das’s house, the snake vanished, and in its place appeared Deities of Gaura and Vishnupriya. Gaurasundara and His beloved Vishnupriya came out of the gola and climbed into Narottama’s lap in plain view of everyone. (Bhakti-ratnakara 10.202) (In the image: Shrila Narottam Das Thakur).
Narahari Chakravarti has described Narottama’s activities extensively in his Narottama-vilasa. One can understand his outstanding feats by reading this book.

Gaurasundara and His beloved Vishnupriya came out of the gola and climbed into Narottama’s lap in plain view of everyone. (Bhakti-ratnakara 10.202)

Everyone was quite amazed. These same Deities are today being served in Gambhila.

A certain smarta Brahmin scholar blasphemed Narottama, calling him a shudra. As a result he was attacked by leprosy. He later had a vision of the Goddess in a dream. He went and fell at Narottama Das’s feet and begged him for forgiveness, as she had told him to, and was thus freed from the terrible disease.

Harirama and Ramakrishna, the sons of Shivananda Acharya, were taking a goat and a buffalo to be offered as a sacrifice to the Goddess on the order of their father. They met Narottama and Ramachandra Kaviraj on the way and were attracted by their effulgent beauty. Narottama Thakur advised the two young Brahmins to abandon worship in the modes of passion and ignorance which entailed violence to animals and to worship the Supreme Lord without any desire. The brothers immediately let the goat and buffalo go and bathed in the Padma. They then took initiation from Narottama and dedicated their lives to the service of Lord Krishna and His Devotees.

When Shivananda Acharya heard about this, he became angry and called a Smarta scholar from Mithila named Murari to come and defeat Narottama’s Vaishnava philosophy. However, Harirama and Ramakrishna were given divine blessings by their guru and were able to defeat every one of the Smarta’s arguments with scriptural evidence. Defeated, Shivananda Acharya went to pray to the Goddess. She appeared to him that night in a dream and rebuked him for his enmity to the Vaishnavas and told him to cease all such behavior.

In the course of time, Ganga Narayan Chakravarti, Jagannath Acharya and other well-known Brahmins started to become Narottama’s disciples. This caused a stir in the Smarta community and they went to complain to Raja Narasimha: “Narottama is a shudra who makes disciples of Brahmins. He is using some kind of mystic powers or hypnotism to convert them. He should be stopped.”

After discussions with Raja Narasimha, it was decided that a scholar named Rupa Narayan should be summoned to debate Narottama. This Brahmin had won numerous debates of this sort and was known as a digvijayi. The Raja himself set off with Rupa Narayan and a number of other Brahmins toward Kheturi.

Ramachandra Kaviraj and Ganga Narayan Chakravarti were upset to see the wicked intentions of the Raja and his pandita. When they heard that the Raja and his entourage were resting overnight in Kumarapura village, they went in disguise as a potter and a pan-seller and set up stalls in the village market. When the Brahmins came through the market, Ramachandra and Ganga Narayan spoke with them in Sanskrit. The Brahmins were astounded that even ordinary stall-keepers in the village were able to speak in Sanskrit. Ramachandra and Ganga Narayan began a debate with the Brahmins, defeating every Smarta argument that they put forward and establishing the pure doctrine of devotional service.

The Raja and his Digvijayi Pandit were rendered speechless by the scholarship of the two ordinary stall-keepers. When they learned that the two men were disciples of Narottama Das, the Raja said to his pandita, “If Narottama’s ordinary disciples can defeat you in debate, there is no need of going to see him.” But once again, the Goddess appeared to Narasimha and Rupa Narayan and ordered them to go to Narottama and pray for forgiveness for their offenses. The two of them did so and became Devotees of Radha and Krishna.

Two Songs by Narottama

In the Gaudiya Vaishnava Abhidhana, the following comments are found: “Narottama’s ashrama was in a place called Bhajanatuli, about two miles from his capital city, Kheturi. Narottama did his preaching through kirtan. He created the style of kirtan known as Garanahati. He wrote two books, Prarthana and Prema-bhakti-chandrika, which are like the very life of the Devotees. He has written songs which are appropriate for every devotional mood, and this is what touches the Devotees’ hearts. These two books are so popular that they have been published countless times. Narottama’s influence can be appreciated even in distant Manipura. Everyone agrees that the Vaishnava religion spread through Manipura through Narottama’s potency. His devotional songs are sung in every home throughout Manipura state.

Shrinivas Acharya’s disciple Ramachandra Kaviraj was Narottama’s dearest companion. Narottama received news of Ramachandra’s disappearance first; not long afterward he heard of Shrinivas’s disappearance, he wrote the following song in the mood of separation which is capable of melting even a stone-like heart.

je anila prema-dhana karuna pracura
hena prabhu kotha gela acarya thakura
kahan mora Svarupa rupa, kahan sanatana?
kahan dasa raghunatha patita-pavana?
kahan mora bhatta-yuga, kahan kaviraja?

Narottama Dasa Thakura
Where has Acharya Thakur gone, he who out of great mercy brought the wealth of love as a gift to the world. Where are my Svarupa and Rupa, where is Sanatan? Where has Raghunath Das, the deliverer of the most fallen, gone? Where are Raghunath Bhatta and Gopal Bhatta? Where is Krishnadas Kaviraj? Where has the king of the dance, Gauranga, suddenly disappeared to? I will beat my head against the rocks or enter the flames--but where can I go to find that ocean of virtue, Gauranga? Narottama Das is crying because he is deprived of the association of all those companions of the Lord. (In the wallpaper: Lord Chaitanya and His associates).

Narottama Das Thakur was the topmost of the followers of Rupa Goswami, Mahaprabhu’s close associate. His devotion to Rupa Goswami can be recognized from the following song:

shri rupa manjari pada sei mora sampada
sei mora bhajana pujana
sei mora prana-dhana sei more abharana
sei mora jivanera jivana

sei mora rasa-nidhi sei mora vancha-siddhi

praphullita habe nishi-dine

cira-dina tapita jivana
ha ha prabhu kara daya deha morekahan mora bhatta-yuga,
kahan kavira ja pada-chaya
narottama laila sharana

Rupa Manjari’s feet are my wealth; they are my worship, they are my ritual. They are what keep me alive, they are my ornament, they are the life of my life.

They are my ocean of nectar, they are the perfection of my desire, they are my Vedic religion. They are my vow, they are my austerity, they are the mantra that I chant on my beads. They are my religious duty.

Fate will be kind to me, and I will find my perfection by attaining her feet and will be able to see with my own eyes the beauty of Radha and Krishna’s form, the moon of the lily of my life.

The snake of your absence has burned up my body with its poison; I have suffered this pain for so long. O my lord, be merciful to me, give me the shade of your feet. Narottama has taken shelter.

I offer my repeated obeisances to Shrila Narottama Das Thakur, who appears to some as devotion itself incarnate, or as the essence of renunciation in human form — this is forever the opinion of the wise.

May the dancing of Shrila Narottama Das Thakur’s lotus feet, which follows every beat of the drum and hand cymbals and which incarnates the beauty of his intoxication in the songs glorifying Gauranga bring fulfillment to me, his servant, by bringing to fruition all his sacrifices.

Shri Jiva gave both Shrinivas Acharya’s disciple Ramachandra Sena and his brother Govinda the Kaviraj title.

Narottama Dasa Thakura
After a great deal of suffering, you finally dragged me to Vraja-dham, tying the rope of mercy around my neck. But now, the forces of fate and illusion have loosened that rope and thrown me back down the well of material existence. (In the image: Deities of Shrila Narottam Das Thakur Shri Shri Radha Vraja Mohan, Shri Vrindavan Dham).
