ENVY

ENVY

SRI JAYA KI PURNIMAKI JAYA SRI RASAYATRA BALARAMASRI KRISHNA KI JAYA RASA VasantaKI JAYA SRI Thakura VamsivadanaSRI PRABHU KI JAYA Syamananda

The other day we were talking and the subject of envy came up.
A person asked, "If  I envy for a person, how can i release this envy?"  I replied with this example.  You have a neighbor, and you're jealous of your neighbor because he is more opulent than you-- has a better house than yours, a better car than yours, etc..  To break free from envy you have for your neighbor, you have have a total change in your consciousness.  Instead of envy, begin to appreciate some other positive things, for example, he always has clean car while I always have a dirty one, he always has a beautifully arranged garden, and I always have a disaster.... he is a controlled person and regulated, I'm always disturbed, and so on.  At the moment you are appreciating the neighbor, jealousy disappears.  The person told me, thanks for your reply, it has helped me a lot.
Deepening the subject of envy, the question arises, what is the origin of envy?   The answer is very simple, janmādy asya yataḥ, the origin is Krishna or God, and all things that we can experience bear their origin in Krishna or God, or in other words, are with Krishna or God.  In relation to this, in The Nectar of Devotion, Chapter 23 entitled, "The Personality of Krishna", it is said:

 "
[...] A person who is very envious, proud, easily angered, restless and complacent is called dhīroddhata by learned scholars. Such qualities were visible in the character of Lord Kṛṣṇa because, when He was writing a letter to Kālayavana, Kṛṣṇa addressed him as a sinful frog. In His letter Kṛṣṇa advised Kālayavana that he should immediately go and find some dark well for his residence, because there was a black snake named Kṛṣṇa who was very eager to devour all such sinful frogs. Kṛṣṇa reminded Kālayavana that He could turn all the universes to ashes simply by looking at them.
The above statement by Kṛṣṇa seems apparently to be of an envious nature, but according to different pastimes, places and times this quality is accepted as a great characteristic. Kṛṣṇa's dhīroddhata qualities have been accepted as great because Krsna uses them only to protect His devotees. In other words, even undesirable traits may also be used in the exchange of devotional service. [...]"

In the prayers of Srila Srinivasa Acharya one of the 6 Goswamis of Vrindavan he says they were popular among ruffians and also gentlemen, as they were free souls with no envy.  Regarding envy is very interesting the note that Srila Prabhupada made at the end of Madhya lila of Sri Caitanya Caritamrita.

"[...] The author of Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Krishna dasa Kaviraj Goswami has condemned all enemies comparing them with pigs and pigs envious.
The movement for Krishna consciousness, which is spreading worldwide, is appreciated by sincere people, although they had never heard of the pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Krishna. Today, even the highest priestly circles show their appreciation for this movement. They concluded that it is a very good move and have something to learn from him. In India, however, there are people who, although they claim to belong to the same cult, they feel very envious of the acharya. They have done everything they could to prevent our activities, but, as far as we are concerned, we follow the footsteps of Krishna dasa Kaviraj gosvami and consider pigs and pigs are envious. Our desire is simply to present the pastimes of Lord Krishna and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as best we can, so that people really honest to purify your heart. We hope you enjoy this work and to grant us his blessings.
It appears that even a great personality of the stature of Krishnadasa Kaviraja gosvami had to deal with obstacles born of envy, what can we say of us, we are more than insignificant creatures
in this universe. We're just trying to do everything we can to implement the orders of our spiritual master. [...]"
In the book entitled The Prayers of Queen Kunti, Srila Prabhupada says: "If someone is envious, he is in the material world, and if one is free from envy, lives in the spiritual world.
