The International Society for Krishna Consciousness, ISKCON, known as the Hare Krishna movement, is a company founded by His Divine Grace Abhay Charanaravinda Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in New York, in July 1966, with the aim of sponsoring the welfare of the human society in general, spreading awareness of Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, according to the teachings of the Vedic scriptures revealed in India, in ancient times.
In the document of incorporation of ISKCON, Srila Prabhupada reveals the "Seven purposes of ISKCON":
1) systematically propagate spiritual knowledge throughout society, and educate people in the techniques of spiritual life, to stop the imbalance of values in life and achieve unity and peace in the world.
2) propagate Krishna consciousness as revealed in the Bhagavad-gita and the Srimad Bhagavatam.
3) Gather the members of the Society together and closer to Krishna, the prime entity, thus developing the idea among members and humanity at large, that each soul is part of the nature of God, Krishna .
4) To teach and encourage the sankirtan movement, congregational chanting of the holy name of God as revealed in the teachings of Mahaprabhu, the greatest teacher, Sri Chaitanya.
5) To erect for the members and for society at large a holy place of transcendental pastimes dedicated to the Personality of Krishna.
6) Attach more members, with the intention of teaching a simpler, more natural way of life.
7) In order to achieve the above objectives, publish and distribute newspapers, magazines, books and other writings.
Grounded in such purposes and inspiration that came from Srila Prabhupada, the Acharya, one who teaches by his own example, his disciples quickly began creating schools or gurukula, farms and preaching centers around the world and raising temples and shrines magnificent, to general astonishment.
The translations and commentaries of Srila Prabhupada's Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita and other books and periodicals, publisher originated devotional books and largest and most important in the world Vedic philosophy: Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, the BBT, with headquarters in three American cities, in two cities in Europe, India and Asia and general acclaim of academics and scholars of Vedic antiquity.
Since ISKCON, Srila Prabhupada and his disciples have taught the world a way of life in Krishna Consciousness, God Consciousness, which soon had followers everywhere, carrying the causeless mercy of divine love in such a way that Srila Prabhupada said, in a beautiful book by way of biography: "He built a house where they can live the whole world." Unfortunately his disciples led by the great ambition for power and control people wanting poisoned Srila Prabhupada in 1977 (in this connection see the book talks 36, page 367), and changed its instructions (regarding with this view Srila Prabhupada letter sent to all ISKCON the July 9, 1977).
Chants the maha-mantra: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare and be happy.
